The main goal for braces is to beautify our patient’s smiles. To accomplish this, we have to schedule visits, make adjustments to make sure things are working as they should. However, this is a two way street and our patients have to keep their end of the agreement. This includes not eating certain types of foods. Some foods can loosen or break braces and should be scratched from your menu at least until the braces come off.
Avoid sugary and sticky foods.
Sugary and starchy foods generate plaque acid that cause tooth decay and promote gum disease. You’ll have to cut down on chips, soda, and sweets. You will especially have to avoid sticky, chewy sweets because they will cause damage to your wires as well as loosen brackets.
Cut food into small pieces
Cut the hard foods into small bite sized pieces such as carrots, apples, or meats. This makes them less of a threat to your brackets.
Stay away from hard, crunchy snacks
These types of snacks including popcorn, nuts, and hard candy can break brackets.
Here is a short list of foods to avoid while your braces are on:
- Apples (unless they cut into small wedges
- Beef jerky
- Bubble gum
- Candy canes or suckers
- Caramels and chewy candies
- Corn on the cob:
- Gummi anything
- Hard candies
- Ice cubes (biting)
- Pizza Crust
- Ribs and Chicken Wings
- Taffy and sticky candies
We know this is a lot to give up but we promise you that it is worth it in the long run. If you have any questions on foods that you can or cannot eat, feel free to contact us!
